MLK and Black History Month
Coretta Scott King
Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was a visionary poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist whose voice gave strength to generations. Her groundbreaking I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) transformed American literature by confronting racism and trauma with truth and resilience. Across seven autobiographies, essays, and poetry, she celebrated identity, courage, and Black womanhood, while her life as a dancer, actress, singer, and advisor to presidents embodied the spirit of a Renaissance woman. Angelou’s legacy endures as a cultural icon whose artistry and activism reshaped storytelling and inspired the pursuit of justice and hope.

Tuskegee Airman
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Forces, trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field during World War II. Despite segregation and discrimination, they excelled as fighter and bomber pilots, mechanics, and support staff, earning distinction in combat with the famed “Red Tails” of the 332nd Fighter Group. Their courage and skill not only protected American bombers abroad but also helped pave the way for the desegregation of the U.S. military in 1948, leaving a lasting legacy as pioneers of excellence, resilience, and progress in both military and civil rights history.
